Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 cannabinoids produced naturally in the cannabis plant. CBD was first isolated from the cannabis plant in 1940 by Roger Adams, a U.S. chemist. In the 60’s, after further research, it was concluded that not only did CBD have many health benefits, it had no psychoactive effects. Despite the many benefits of the cannabis plant, Marijuana, Hemp and CBD remained illegal for possession or use. The War on Drugs in 1971 further stigmatized any form of the cannabis plant, including Marijuana, which became labeled as a Schedule 1 controlled substance. This class is the most restrictive and punishable by law.
The future of CBD and cannabis has taken a positive turn, however. In 2018, the Federal Farm Bill was signed. This bill allows farmers to grow hemp and sell hemp products as long as its THC content is below .3%. This federal law varies from state to state. In June of 2019, Texas passed HB 1325 that aligned with the Farm Bill and legalized the growing, selling and consuming of hemp.
Taking CBD has quickly become a natural way to regulate a variety of biological processes like relaxation, appetite, sleep, inflammatory issues and cognitive function. The only known side effect of CBD is drowsiness
Although Marijuana and Hemp both come from a strain of Cannabis Sativa, they contain different concentrations of cannabinoids. The most significant difference is the levels of THC, a psychoactive property, they both have. Marijuana has high amounts of THC, while Hemp has very little. For centuries, Hemp has been harvested for industrial use, while Marijuana has been known to be used for its psychoactive effects.
Here at Paloma Verde, our hemp oil extract is 100% Phytocannabinoid-Rich (PCR). This means that along with CBD, there are other beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes and flavanoids. Research has shown that all the cannabinoids together have greater benefits when working together. This is called the entourage effect. Our unique and proprietary formula is removed of all unwanted compounds, waxes and chlorophyll and only uses the leaves and flowers of the plant. That way, only the best quality aspects of the hemp plant are used, enhancing the potency and CBD content in every batch. THC is also removed from our PCR proprietary strain hemp extract making it Broad-Spectrum.
There are different types of CBD that are important to know when shopping for a product that is right for you. A few on the market now are:
This is CBD in its isolated form. It is isolated from Hemp into a white crystalline powder or slab. Products labeled “CBD Isolate” lack terpenes and other beneficial compounds that help CBD increase its bioavailability.
Products labeled “Full Spectrum” is the least processed form of CBD and it contains THC, so it can present a risk for users who would be subject to drug testing. These products should also be avoided by anyone who is not comfortable using THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana.
Broad-Spectrum CBD oil contains all the beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes, however there is one more filtration process that removes the psychoactive compound, THC. At Paloma Verde all of our products are THC-free. Our third-party lab testing confirms that no THC is detected in any of our products. The remaining cannabinoids and terpenes create the entourage effect, helping to maximize CBD’s therapeutic effects. The combination of all the compounds producing a stronger influence, more than any individual one can deliver alone, creates a synergistic effect within the body.
The hemp plant has many constituent parts, only one of which is CBD. Terpenes are beneficial compounds that are found in the hemp plant and like CBD, lack psychoactive effects. They are known to be used for a variety of purposes in traditional cultures such as aromatherapy, supporting muscle and joint function, mood and overall wellness. Terpenes are identified in the FDA database as generally recognized as safe (GRAS), making them safe for consumption and use. Terpenes have benefits, like cannabinoids, and work synergistically with other compounds in cannabis on the human endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD), have been shown to work in our bodies through receptors in our Endocannabinoid System (ECS). There is much more research being done, as the ECS was newly discovered in the 1990’s. What we do know is that we have two main receptors, CB1 and CB2. When cannabinoids stimulate the receptors, our bodies can experience a state of homeostasis, which maintains stability throughout the body. Supporting cognitive function, relaxation, appetite, sleep and inflammatory issues are only a few benefits of CBD.
